What is Strategic Personal Advisory?

Life doesn't stand still. It never has. It never will.

Every few years it asks something different of us. Sometimes we choose those challenges. More often, they choose us.

A career changes. You earn the promotion you've worked toward—or lose the job you thought was secure. A relationship struggles. A child is born. Parents begin to need your care. Your health changes. Your ambitions evolve. You finally achieve the success you've been chasing, only to discover it doesn't answer the questions you thought it would.

These moments aren't random interruptions. They're signposts that your current way of thinking, deciding, and acting may no longer fit the season you're in.

Strategic Personal Advisory is an ongoing thought partnership designed to help you navigate those transitions deliberately rather than reactively. Together we make decisions from your deepest values instead of your strongest fears, your passing emotions, or the pull of immediate comfort. It combines reflection with action, insight with accountability, and long-term thinking with practical next steps.

Think of it as having a trusted advisor beside you, not to live your life for you, but to help you see more clearly, think more wisely, and act with greater intention.

The goal isn't simply to help you feel better.

Nor is it merely to help you achieve another goal.

The goal is to help you become the kind of person who consistently makes wise decisions, builds a life that reflects your values, and navigates future challenges with increasing confidence, courage, and independence.

Because eventually...you shouldn't need me.

Why would someone choose a Strategic Personal Advisor instead of...

  • a therapist?

  • a coach?

  • a consultant?

  • a mentor?

  • figuring it out alone?

Therapy is often the right place when healing, emotional processing, or mental health are the primary need. Many excellent therapists help people understand themselves more deeply, process difficult experiences, and reduce suffering.

Strategic Personal Advisory assumes that understanding is only part of lasting change.

Eventually insight must become decisions, habits, skills, conversations, boundaries, and action. Healing matters. It absolutely does…and to quote my favorite movie character on the nature of life: “Life, I’ll tell you about life…you’re born, and then you die sooner than you thought you would.” So I hold a philosophy of ‘don’t delay,’ because most of us take for granted that we have lots of time.

Coaching is often built around the belief that the client already has the answers and the coach's role is primarily to ask questions. There is absolute wisdom in that approach. I use it extensively. Why? People often discover important truths when given space to think.

But there are also moments when experience matters, and where the curated collection of 5 + decades of trial and error can be helpful to offer. Sometimes a person doesn't need another question. They need someone willing to say:

"I think you're avoiding the real issue." or "Here's the pattern I see." or "If I were advising someone I love, I wouldn't recommend that path."

Strategic Personal Advisory values curiosity, but it doesn't pretend neutrality is always the most helpful response. When appropriate, I will offer my perspective clearly and explain why.

Consultants solve specific external problems. Some coaches and therapists like to call themselves consultants. It makes sense. It’s an angle because consultants are known to optimize organizations, systems, or processes.

Strategic Personal Advisory focuses on the person making those decisions.

Mentors offer wisdom drawn from their own experience. That's incredibly valuable. I wish we had more mentorships in the modern world. The art of mentoring is very close to describing what I do but with one caveat:

Strategic Personal Advisory borrows from mentoring while remaining focused on helping you think clearly about your circumstances rather than encouraging you to replicate mine.

Figuring out life on your own: There's nothing wrong with trying to figure life out on your own. Most of us do & most of us do just fine. But my least favorite F-word is ‘fine.’ I assert that the challenge is that we're remarkably poor judges of our own blind spots.

We normalize unhealthy patterns. We postpone difficult conversations. We rationalize decisions we'd question if someone else made them.

A trusted advisor doesn't replace your judgment.

They sharpen it. The objective of Strategic Personal Advisory isn't to become indispensable. It's the opposite.

You don’t NEED anyone to advise you, but you could choose it. My role is to help you think more clearly, decide more wisely, act more intentionally, and gradually become the kind of person who depends less on advice—including mine.

The work is always done with you, never for you.

Most helping professions have a dominant mode of operation.

  • Therapy often prioritizes understanding and healing.

  • Coaching often prioritizes self-discovery and accountability.

  • Consulting often prioritizes expert solutions.

  • Mentoring often prioritizes experience and example.

Strategic Personal Advisory integrates all four—but is governed by a different question:

"Given who you are, the season you're in, and the life you're trying to build, what is the wisest next move?"
